this morning spoke volumes as the nation and newtown remember what happened one week ago today. only rain drops heard during this moment. firefighters there in newtown, paying tribute to 20 young children, 6, 7 years of age and seven adults gunned down for reasons we may never know. the reflections began at 9:30 a.m. eastern time, that is the precise time that first call came in. at least 29 states held a moment of silence, put flags at half-staff, even parts of the internet went silent this morning. video gamers put down their consoles in unity and bells across connecticut state sounded for each killed at sandy hook elementary. the attorney general is set to head to newtown, connecticut, today after meeting with vice president joe biden at 1:00. but don't expect to see him. this is not a public event. the attorney general has scheduled to apparently meet with some of the law enforcement officials in that town and then also with some of the first responders who were the first people to enter the sandy hook elementary school and discover the carnage there that ended up being the loss of 20 children and six adults in that school and then, of course, the mother of the killer who was shot in her bed and the killer himself. the attorney general apparently is not traveling with any other senior justice officials to newtown. he will also not be attending any of the funerals or the memorials. and again, you will not be seeing the pictures of him. there's no plan for this to be anything public other than these meetings he's going to have with those law enforcement officials. but, of course, this is a day of more farewells in newtown. six, six funerals in this tiny community, six visitations also. so 12 services. these people b

we were all stunned by the newtown, connecticut school shooting massacre. in a half hour at 6:30 there will be a national moment of silence in memory of the victims. churches in connecticut will ring their bells 26 times in honor of the 20 students and six adults killed. we will go to newtown at that time to cover that memorial and those bells ringing. there will be funerals and memorials for four children and two of the adults killed. >> all of us have a son or daughter or nephew or cousin. all of us feel connected to children. and those who help children. >> investigators say they still have yet to find a motive for the mass shooting. and another shooting victim has been laid to rest in new hampshire. the funeral for nancy lanza the mother of the gunman was held yesterday at an undisclosed location in the town of kingston. approximately 25 family members attended that ceremony. there have been numerous vigils across the country and in the bay area. this morning a south bay -- the dominican sisters will hold a vigil at its chapel in mission boulevard. and it is open to people

in this country. now it's up to all of us to make sure changes come to pass. the community of newtown connecticut is still deeply mourning the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. the president struck an almost impossible balance of heartfelt emotion and out ragrage. the weight of the moment. no american can relive the horror of this. >> we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. and to end them, we must change. we will be told that the causes of such violence are complex and that is true. no single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. but that can't be an excuse for an action. surely we can do better than this. >> this is a moment in history where an event alters the direction of a country and moves lawmakers to unity. dianne feinstein was the first to announce an update on an assault weapons ban which she introduced in congress and will introduce it early next year. >> i intend to introduce a bill. and i intend one way or another, no matter how long it takes, to get that bill through. there's one thin

in politics, where emotion will pull the logic train. the emotion of what happened in newtown, connecticut, the emotion contained in a week of funerals, we're at the front of a church or synagogue or a mosque, you're going to be very small -- there are going to be very small caskets. t.j., if we still have the picture of jack pinto buried yesterday in newtown, connecticut, buried in his little league uniform, that right there is what is going to change the dialogue for this. people carry around for years pictures of their children in little league uniforms, hockey uniforms, first and second grade school picture. that's the picture, the emotion that will pull this thing. >> if it doesn't, there's a serious problem. i understand the president does -- has a lot to do, when it comes to making sure that our economy doesn't fall off the cliff. there are tens of millions of working americans that know that the fiscal cliff situation needs to be addressed. isn't human nature funny, though, how we need to get moving on this? >> those critical issues you just mentioned, they seem so insignificant. >

on the ground in newtown, but that there is -- that i think for folks who have wanted to see reform on our nation's gun laws, that this could be an inflexion point. does the mayor share that feeling? >> he hopes so. you know, i may be alone in this, but i am just no longer comforted by comforting words. i feel like as the governor said, you know, we've become very good at doing these memorials after these events and then nothing happens substantively to change the underlying dynamic and the underlying problem, so i'm almost, frankly, a little suspicious of comforting words. comforting words are not nearly muff, and we need action and we need presidential action, presidential leadership. we need congressional action and congressional leadership. mike bloomberg is the head of an organization. mayors all over the country, more than 500. he spent $10 million in the last election to defeat people who had nra support. there are a lot of people in this country who know that it's time for a change. we need to hear all of those voices, and we need leadership in congress and from the white house to

elementary school in newtown, connecticut, takes priority with me and makes this so-called fiscal cliff look like a mole hill. we are at odds are around here about money while all around us, unnecessary gods are proliferating in communities across our nation, and mental need -- mental health needs are not being met, in helping our society to crumble while we are sitting here mumbling around about whether or not we are going to hold hands and jump off a fiscal cliff, as serious as that is, and the consequences would be for a number of things. not only are we talking about america, we are talking about the world when we fail to do things we need to do. but for the moment, the issue of the day has to do with an adequate discussion on talks of the american people about just what we need to do regarding this measure. we cannot do everything, and i know that. we cannot stop evil and violence by educating everything, but in my judgment we can and we must do something. failure to do that is a helluva lot more important to me than whether the president and john boehner jump off a fiscal cliff. >> it

on our faces, even today the horror of newtown remains unspeakable. and as congresswoman mccarthy said, we have been here before. over and over again calling for action after these terrible massacres. but as she also said, this time it's different. this time we had 20 little beautiful angels and their teachers taken from us. and finally, our nation seems to realize collectively that it's the time to have a deep national conversation. now is the time for comprehensive solution, one that talks about our violent culture, our mental health system, and that talks about really doing something about gun violence. when we return in january, we are all planning to work hard together on a solution, on all of us solutions, but right now we can do something this week before congress leaves. we can pass legislation that will be a first and a reasonable step to help protect our children and to help show that congress has the will to begin stopping these massacres. this week we can bring to the floor a bill that congresswoman mccarthy and i introduced some months ago, co-sponsored by so many of our f

after newtown, lapierre called for armed police in every school and a national mental health registry. that's right. register people who have mental health problems but no registry for gun buyers and owners. let's bring in mike who is in washington. >> reporter: the feeling is the nra may have helped its cause and the nra may have helped its fundraising cause. nra may have fired up its base. but the nra did nothing to help its cause here on capitol hill. quite the opposite. what we've heard from lawmakers today in the wake of that wasn't even a press conference he didn't take questions. in the wake of that statement that wayne lapierre made was that the impetus now -- they almost have fresh momentum. we heard diane feinstein one of the principal authors of gun legislation that has new life now. she says it doesn't matter how long it takes it may take a year, two years, three years, the conventional wisdom is after the horror from newtown dies down somewhat, after the outrage and anger has subside, congress doesn't get down to case until february after the inauguration, after the state

that the killer and the newtown incident used, state that they're going to try to sell the company and get out of the firearms business. so this is really a watershed moment. i think the nra is really on its heels which is why i argue that we really need to work strongly to marginalize the nra and to recognize what a radical fringe group it's become over the last generation. >> eliot: i wanted to come back in a moment to how one can do that because i think that's exactly right. how to reveal to the public that they are a fringe group and perhaps more importantly reveal to the members of congress that the nra is a fringe group that should not be accorded the respect and the perceived power it has had in the past. i want to read a quote from wayne la lapierrre the head of the nra that you use in a powerful article you've written. this is wayne won't pierre, ceo of the nra saying with four more years of obama your firearms freedoms are gone and we'll spend the rest of our lives mourning the freedoms we've lost. every freedom we c

to pass common sense safety laws in the wake of the newtown shooting massacre. the president knows this is going to be a heavy lift. >> that's why i've asked the vice president to lead an effort that includes members of my cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of concrete proposals no later than january, proposals that i then intend to push without delay. this is not some washington commission. this is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside. >> one of the reasons the president is asking for action without delay is because he knows change can be accomplished, and it's been done before. the assault weapons ban signed by president clinton reduced crime lower than it had been in a generation. it's been 18 years since the crime bill was signed, and eight years since it was allowed to expire. perhaps 24 is why president obama is turning to the bill's architect for guidance. >> i want to single out for special recognition the chairman of the senate judiciary committee who ha

, good afternoon, everyone. the entire congress is united and condemning the violence in newtown, and on the need to enforce our laws. as we continue to learn the facts, congress will examine whether there is an appropriate and constitutional response that would better protect our citizens. with regard to the year end tax issue, i would remind everyone that in the summer of 2010 senator schumer said, quote, first i don't know a single one of my colleagues who wouldn't prefer to do tax breaks for people up to $1 million. it's my understanding that that is essentially the proposal that the house of representatives is likely to send over to us later in the week. >> well, i think the other thing that's getting lost in the whole debate about the fiscal cliff is where are the savings, where are the spending cuts. the president has talked about a balanced plan, but as they've tried to negotiate with speaker boehner and the house leadership, it continues to focus on one issue and that is how much are we going to raise taxes on small businesses which is, as we said before, a terrible idea

were shot and killed in newtown, connecticut. on sunday, when i opened the newspaper to read about the shootings, i saw a photograph of one of the children who was killed. her name was emily. a little blonde-haired girl with a beautiful smile. she looked at me from the paper, i saw my granddaughter's elsa and tilly looking back at me. so i come to this issue as a grandparent whose children but for fate could have been in the same situation as the children in newtown. and come to this as a member of congress. you know the people back home in just about every district keep asking us why it is that we can't get anything done here. well, i'm a newcomer. i've only been here about five months, and i know what is going on in terms of the political gamesmanship. this is an issue on which political games have to stop. we should have members of the republican caucus standing with us today and i hope in time we will. this has to be a bipartisan issue in the end. and so, as i have looked at what happened over the last two years, over 20 mass shootings and vitually every one of them has two thi

this morning regarding the n.r.a.'s response to the newtown shootings. first up leslie from wash burn, maine. leslie, go ahead. caller: yes. i'm originally from northern maine and moved here from northern new york and i personally had a second-grade and third-grade teacher killed from mentally unstable students. one used a knife and one beat a teacher. i personally believe this is a mental health problem and everybody knew they had problems. until they take care of the mental health problem, you're going to continue to have deaths. host: so you say you're in support of having armed guards in schools around the country? >> yes, i am. caller: i'm a 23-year army veteran and i've hunted and fished all my life. host: there were reports that there was an affirmed guard at columbine and that didn't seem to deter those boys from doing -- causing the mayhem that they had. caller: that was a large campus at columbine, and you've got to have gareds at the gate and if you have a huge place, you need more than one guard. i've been in combat in the army. host: where were you? thank you for your service. c

for them and their parents -- my heart breaks for them and their parents and the people of newtown. i looked at the picture of little caroline previdi, one of the 6-year-old children who died. i'm sure she was a happy child, full of life's potential, just like my own little caroline who just turned 7 a few days ago. what can you say? it's unthinkable that a person would kill innocent little children with such cravenness and violence. these children's christmas presents are still under the tree. their moms and dads are still looking at them. in this town, will we pride ourselves on rhetorical flourish , precision of thought and volume of words, what can you say? what can you do? other than stand in solidarity, in spirit with the grieving families and perhaps, just perhaps hug those that you love a little bit tighter. now, madam speaker, the sandy hook elementary school tragedy is sparking a national debate about how and why this happened and how it might have been prevented. that debate is understandable and needs to happen. in the coming weeks, congress will be called on to react. que
